Divorce is not a pleasant thing to dwell on. Knowing the various factors and key statistics, which can lead to divorce, is beneficial for multiple reasons. For one thing, if we’re aware of critical numbers on divorce, we can gain a sense of what’s really happening in society. That includes how frequently people divorce and the probability of divorce taking place in a given situation. In short, learning about divorce statistics can give a deeper insight into the role of divorce throughout society. In this post, we’re going to examine a few key statistics on divorce here in the State of Maryland.
Divorce Statistic #1: 10,494
This is the number – 10,494 – of divorces that took place in the State of Maryland in the year 2020. For the years 2018 and 2019, the number of divorces was 14,486 and 16,323, respectively. In context, the number of marriages which took place in Maryland in 2020 was 26,543. While in the years 2018 and 2019, the number of marriages was 35,611 and 33,856, respectively. When we examine these numbers, we can take away several observations. One observation is that divorces declined significantly during the pandemic of 2020, but the same is also true for marriages. People tied the knot less frequently, but they also split apart less frequently too.
Divorce Statistic #2: 2.4 per 1,000
This statistic – 2.4 for every 1,000 inhabitants – is the current divorce rate in the State of Maryland, as of 2022. This statistic comes directly from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Interestingly, this figure represents an increase from where the divorce rate stood in 2020 – 1.7 per 1,000. A decrease from where the rate stood back in 1990 (3.4 per 1,000).
Divorce Statistic #3: 11%
This statistic represents the current divorce rate in the city of Cumberland, Maryland. As of right now, this divorce rate in Cumberland is the highest rate of any city in the State of Maryland. Overall, Cumberland is a small city, with just under 20,000 residents, and has a median income of just under $41,000. No one knows for certain why the residents of Cumberland are so prone to divorce, but we can imagine that the reasons must be familiar: financial instability, mental health issues, and other recurring factors.
Divorce Statistic #4: 30.3 & 28.7
These numbers – 30.3 and 28.7 – represent the average age of first marriage for men and women, respectively, in the State of Maryland. These numbers come from 2017, but there shouldn’t be too much divergence between these numbers from 2017 and current figures today. Although these numbers aren’t directly relevant to divorce, they do indirectly intersect with divorce because the age of marriage is associated with divorce. Overall, these numbers show us that, compared with previous generations, people are waiting longer to get married, and this likely plays a role in the divorce rate itself.
